Episode 1 of the Sikkim Motorcycle Series begins on Panchami night of Durga Puja as we leave Kolkata around midnight and begin our long ride toward the mountains. This first episode covers the journey from Kolkata to Farakka, riding through key highways, junctions, and checkpoints across West Bengal.
The ride starts dramatically with light rain while climbing Maa Flyover. The wet asphalt reflects the street lights and car headlights beautifully, creating shimmering reflections across the road as the city slowly fades behind us.
Route Breakdown (Turn-by-Turn):
Maa Flyover → Jessore Road → Birati Morre → Kalyani Expressway Entry near Nimta Traffic Guard / Santra Morre → Kampa More → Barajaguli → NH12 → Ranaghat → Krishnanagar → Plassey → Berhampore → Pappu da Dhaba (Breakfast Halt) → Farakka Barrage
Journey Highlights:
We begin the ride by ascending Maa Flyover where a sudden splash of rain greets us. The reflections of city lights on the wet asphalt create a cinematic night riding experience.
After descending the flyover, we continue through Jessore Road. Traffic here is present but steadily moving as we cross Birati Morre and proceed toward the entry of Kalyani Expressway.
The beginning of Kalyani Expressway near Nimta Traffic Guard at Santra Morre is slightly tricky. The road is still under construction, lighting is poor, and the stretch narrows down to a single lane, requiring cautious riding.
Once past this section, the highway opens up beautifully. The Kalyani Expressway becomes one of the smoothest stretches of the ride. Well-lit highway lamps, properly segregated lanes, and excellent asphalt make this 33.4 km stretch up to Kampa More extremely enjoyable for cruising.
From Kampa More to Barajaguli the conditions change again. The road becomes darker in places with slightly uneven patches, requiring careful navigation during the night ride.
After exiting Barajaguli we merge onto NH12, one of the primary northbound highways of West Bengal. From here the ride continues through several important towns including Ranaghat, Krishnanagar, and the historic town of Plassey.
Breakfast Halt:
We stop at the well-known Pappu da Dhaba near Nabagram for breakfast. After several hours of riding through the night, this stop helps us refuel ourselves before continuing the journey north toward Morgram and Farakka.
Final Stretch to Farakka:
From Nabagram we continue on NH12 toward Morgram and finally approach Farakka. The Farakka region is a well-known bottleneck because of the Farakka Barrage bridge, where heavy truck traffic often causes long queues on the narrow crossing.
This concludes Episode 1 of the Sikkim ride series where we cover the entire journey from Kolkata to Farakka.
In Episode 2 we continue the ride further north toward Siliguri.
