🌷REVIEW! COMPARISON! Visconti Tarocchi Cary-Yale (Modrone), US Games: 2017 vs 1984 (?)

Описание: MARCH 2018 --- REVIEW: US Games 2017 edition of the Visconti Tarocchi Cary-Yale is very well done indeed. Considering their usual standard when reproducing some older decks. Compared to its predecessor, one with the copyright year 1984 (printed in Belgium and / or published 1990s?), the current (copyright 2017) box and booklet is a class a part. There is definitely more attention to details (recognizing the changing taste in the market perhaps).

THE BOX
The box thick, sturdy, smooth, tastefully designed, and matte. The booklet more complete and informative, with coloured copies of the cards, a relatively heavy weight name in tarot history included, as well as a nice nod to their older edition, "The Lovers" on the cover.

COLOURS AND PRINTING
The blue is very elegant. Regal, almost. The soft gentle glimmer of the gold leaf reproduction seems more intense, although at the cost of crispness of image, and intensity of colours. On this front, US Games seems to still be wrestling with finding that sweet spot. A spot seemingly achieved by the Italian productions of the 1970s and 1990s by the printer(s) Grafica Gutenberg and Il Meneghello (printed by...?) of the Visconti Sforza.

PRICE
For US$45, it is a winner. For the rest of us who have to pay US $35 or so in shipping, the vintage copy might be an option, if that is more to your taste.

ALTERNATIVE: IL MENEGHELLO
Alternatively, if splurging is the only way to obtain a copy, no matter which edition, and if the price difference is not all that much (secondary market is fickle, and postal costs math can give the best mathematician a headache), Il Meneghello might be the way to go. (NOTE: Il Meneghello edition only reproduced actual surviving cards as found today. Other editions often provide "replacement cards" for those cards considered "missing". Il Meneghello's edition makes a great study and reference deck).

LUIGI SCAPINI
These so called "replacement" cards (because there is a possibility that those cards never existed at all) were by Luigi Scapini, who painted many of his own tarot cards.

SIZE REPRODUCTION
The new edition appears to be closer to the original size of the cards, if the original size information as stated in the booklet is accurate.

CAVEAT
There could have been other Cary-Yale editions in 2014 (when I first started looking for a copy). I can't be sure, since I was not attracted to them enough, obviously, to find out that they existed at all.

Some theories and questions that I am pondering about the Seven Virtues depicted in this deck: Is Prudence (Mirror) depicted in the same card as Charity (Suckling)...? If so, why...? Since each of the rest of the virtues seems to have been depicted in their own cards...?
