STORYLINE:
Leaders and royals from across Europe, as well as California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, were among thousands who bid farewell on Saturday to Austrian President Thomas Klestil.
The state funeral for Klestil, who died this week just two days before his term was to end, concluded four days of national mourning that began with his casket being brought to the presidential offices in the imperial Hofburg Palace.
About 20,000 people filed past the casket as Klestil lay in state for three days.
Klestil died of multiple organ failure late on Tuesday, a day after he was airlifted to a Vienna hospital following heart failure. He was 71.
Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn conducted a requiem Mass for Klestil Saturday morning in St. Stephen's Cathedral.
He described Klestil as "a deeply committed European."
The presidents of Germany, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, Serbia-Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Hungary also attended.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and former Czech President Vaclav Havel was also among the mourners.
Royal guests included Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, and the crown princes of the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Denmark and Norway.
Princess Anne represented Britain.
Klestil was the sixth president to be buried in the grave, created in 1951 after the death of President Karl Renner.
About 1,000 police officers, including members of an elite anti-terrorism unit, were dispatched for the funeral.
Klestil, who became president in 1992, was widely credited with restoring Austria's credibility after accusations that his predecessor Kurt Waldheim had concealed his Nazi past.
Klestil befriended Schwarzenegger - the Austrian bodybuilder who moved to the United States to become a movie star and now is governor of California - on a visit to Los Angeles.
Klestil established the Austrian Consulate General in Los Angeles in 1969.
Schwarzenegger represented the United States at the funeral.
It was his first trip back to his native Austria since becoming California governor.
