Contents: India's first analog seismograph was established in 1900 by the IMD, with a 15-station network by 1930, expanding to 60 by 1990. After the 1993 Killari earthquake, digital broadband (BB) systems were introduced, and ~200 BB observatories now operate. Since 2015, NCS under MoES manages BB data. GSI has pioneered earthquake geology studies since 1819.

Prof. J.R. Kayal is an internationally renowned geoscientist. He earned his M.Sc. from ISM Dhanbad and a Ph.D. in Seismology from Victoria University, New Zealand. He served GSI, rising to Deputy Director General. He has held adjunct and visiting professorships and authored 150+ research papers, five edited books, and a Springer-published book on South Asian seismology.
