Veteran of ten Edinburgh fringes, the first a visit in 1985 and the rest to perform, Guerilla Autistics show Paul Wady breaks down what can and will be involved from his personal experience. I hope this is helpful.
I have performed across two free fringes and have had some adventures doing it. Here is a programme.
SO YOU ARE BRAVE ENOUGH TO GO UP/GO ON?
SENSORY
PIT STOPS
OTHER PERFORMERS ARE YOUR FRIENDS
THEY MAY OR MAY NOT COME TO YOUR SHOWS - BUT DON'T LET THAT STOP YOU X
SAFE SPACES
GET OUT (for a reorientation and a break)
FOOD AND DRINK AND NAUGHTY THINGS
CRASH
WE ARE NOT THE ONLY PERFORMERS
HANG OUT, DO YOUR BEST AND THERE IS NO SHAME IF THE WHOLE THING DOES NOT WORK AS YOU WANTED IT TO.
Truth is there are some very serious and concerning issues can go wrong around being a performer on the Fringes, let alone one who identifies as Neurodivergent and Neurodiverse in any way. If you take a show there, locate and be aware of support services for your mental health. It's a very high impact space and can have a hell of an effect on you. I can tell you stories of other performers.
Overall, don't be ashamed of spending a lot of time in whatever room you have. Focus on the show and self-care, even if you do not think you need to take it easy. You will have a great time.
Good luck x
