How to install macOS to an external SSD drive for your Apple Silicon M1 M2 M3 M4 Mac & to dual boot

Описание: This video showing how to install and boot macOS from an external SSD drive is an old video but works with all Apple Silicon Macs including all the latest M4 Apple Silicon ARM Macs.

While the video shows how to install Monterey. This step by step guide also works for any version of macOS, including the latest version of macOS Sequoia.

For booting from an external SSD drive I strongly recommend using a fast Thunderbolt 4 SSD, USB4 SSD or Thunderbolt 5 SSD. Here are some links to some Thunderbolt 4 enclosures and fast SSDs that I would recommend.

You may see videos showing you how to move your Home folder to an external drive. I would strongly recommend against doing this as it can lead to many problems. Instead, installing macOS to an external drive is much safer and a better option and will give you the option for dual booting your Mac.

In this video I'm showing how to dual boot and install MacOS Monterey to an external SSD drive for my M1 Max MacBook Pro. This will then create a dual boot Mac system. This also works for M1 Pro MacBook Pro, Mac Mini M1, MacBook Air M1, MacBook Pro M1 and iMac M1. In fact, this dual boot for Mac tutorial will work for any Apple Silicon ARM based Mac computer. It may also work for older Intel X86 Mac computers such as Mac Pro, MacBooks, iMacs etc. with Intel processors.

In the tutorial I also show you how to format an external drive in MacOS Monterey using Disk Utility, which is absolutely necessary in order to prepare the external SSD drive so that you can install MacOS Monterey on to it.

This tutorial also shows you how to download MacOS Monterey from the Mac App Store.

For this particular setup I'm using an external Thunderbolt SSD which uses a fast NVME SSD inside it. This is one that I've put together myself, however you can use an 'off the shelf' Thunderbolt SSD. I will be showing a tutorial soon that guides you through how to build a Thunderbolt SSD.

You can also use an 'off the shelf' external USB C SSD for your external boot drive. These won't be as fast as a Thunderbolt SSD but will be cheaper. A good place to start for an external USB C SSD is the Samsung T7. I will be uploading a video soon showing the 1TB T7 as an external storage drive for the M1 Max MacBook Pro.
