Black Spruce (Picea mariana) is my favourite tree and firewood source in the Boreal Forest. The very fine twigs are the world’s best kindling IMO. The dead branches of the biggest trees are thin and can be collected easily by hand, or quickly by saw or axe. The tree grows straight, narrow and tall, and in stands there are usually abundant dead standing stems in the understory, easy to harvest, cut and split. For tarp poles and shelter building the long poles are the best, easily trimmed of their thin branches.
