Passing the Torch Mentoring Practitioners Share Core Coordination
Thank you to Leslie, Iris, Tamm y and Mandie, who are in my current Passing the Torch Mentoring Program, for the beautiful orchestration of how our embodied distinction of “core coordination” feeds their biointelligent wisdom!
As Leslie and Mandie are demonstrating in their embodied version of the Pilates ROLL DOWN with the Arm Springs on the Cadillac:
Leslie…”when I over-think and stabilize my shoulders, rather than “sense weight” through my hands being “held by the spring support”, it creates a lot of restriction in my body and hardening in places I need to soften for whole body movement. This setup allows me to feel how “effortless effort” moves my spine with grounding and spatial support.
Mandie…”I’m learning in this program, how to see the difference between directional cueing that brings me into a deeper relationship with the person I am assisting…and fixing someone, which creates a separation of client/expert.
Wendy….”thanks, Mandie and Leslie, yes, we are not working on “a body”, which creates tension in a person who thinks they need to be perfect…rather, we are guiding clients to “sense” their biointelligent wisdom, and how they can help themselves, so that releasing into gravity’s support wakes up internal lift naturally! This is a distinction that Ida Rolf, the creator of Rolfing/Structural Integration bodywork called “Spatial Medicine”!
Tammy…”speaking of creating space in your body, I have lived for years with sciatica and being very guarded in my lumbar spine. When Wendy first worked with me, I was very nervous about flexion, but I trusted her and we explored some amazing movements that have taken me out of pain, and into a new relationship with my sacrum: (we’ll show some photos that can demonstrate the setup we used)
“Using the support of the Stretch-eze Band in the ROLLING LIKE A BALL position, and from the Down the Back, Up the Front support with gravity and space……I could feel the band providing new space in my sacrum…my sacrum could BREATHE…and I could roll back with no pain! It was amazing!
“That success with rolling back, encouraged me to try the ROLLOVER, with the Stretch-eze band again, and a small 1/2 BARREL. This SETUP gave my feet something to connect with and it also gave my leg bones something to be heavy into. They often feel tight in my hips, so my sacrum does all the work. In this SET UP, they relaxed and my sacrum felt so organically able to float up, while softening and widening my ribs and chest….it was just so beautiful! I have a whole new conversation happening with my body!”
Creating SPACE is our bodies is a major conversation we address, and Iris shared what has opened up for her using the Stretch-eze Band:
Iris….”yes, I love this important new prop which gives me so much space in my body. I love STANDING IN THE BAND, feeling my feet grounded, and pressing gently with my arms into the sides of the band. This allows my back to widen with breath and I could do a ROLL DOWN from the standing position with much more space in my body!”
When we fight gravity, or attempt to do an exercise perfectly, by over-stabilizing, we create tension. By allowing gravity to support us, or “yielding” into gravity’s support, we awaken our natural uplift, which is gravity’s partner..Ground Reaction Force. We call this relationship …Down the Back, and Up the Front, which creates a spatial , biotensegrity relationship between every cell in our bodies!
