There are several kinds of MFs, two broad categories are Equity and Debt. In equity we have large cap, mid cap, small cap, large and mic cap, multicap, flexi cap, focused, index, etc. And in debt we have liquid funds, ultra short term funds, short term, gilt funds, banking and psu funds etc. We even have Mutual funds for gold and real estate. Coming to IDCW which is income distribution cum capital withdrawal plan, this kind of periodically gives you an income from your own money and reduces your ability to compound your wealth. IDCW plans are best suited for people who are looking to generate regular income from their investment however, this kind of income is treated as dividend income and is taxed just like dividend (as per tax slab), that means it'll hurt those who are in highest tax slab. A better solution is SWP, systematic withdrawal plan: it means you can set up a periodic withdrawal from your growth MF and that withdrawal will be treated capital gain and will be taxed lower.
