Regular speed video of the tsunami near the entrance of the small boat basin in CC harbor, with daylight. With some light, the speed of the currents during the tsunami is more easily seen – the currents in the harbor were likely similar to this for the previous ~ 4 hours. The video starts near the trough of a wave (the ocean is at its lowest point). The (smart) captain rides in front of the incoming surge, which is literally right behind him. The currents go from slack to 6-8 knots over about one minute. This wave has an amplitude of ~3’ (or a crest-to-trough height of ~6’).
At the 3:00 mark of the video, you can see how H Dock, although kinked and stuck under the tsunami due to damage from the wave hours earlier, is acting as a very effective current barrier to the docks behind it. Those docks very likely would have been damaged without this barrier-function of H Dock. Strong currents continued like this for the next few hours, and tsunami currents were noticeable in the harbor for the following two days.
For scale, these piles are massive - 30" diameter.
Time in CC with PDT is -0700 GMT/UTC.
