Today I went to Meiringen with some good friends. Meiringen is about 15 minutes by train from Brienz. At the end of the year a very special custom takes place there: Ubersitz
I didn't know exactly what to expect but I love to discover new Swiss traditions. And so I let myself in on this special Swiss tradition which completely captivated me.

Expulsion of evil spirits in the week of the Old Year.
A week in which night turns into day for many. At the end of the Trychel week - from the second to the last working day of the year - the Trychel processions from the individual villages in the Haslital meet for the Übersitz in Meiringen.
With their impressive processions through the village, the various trychel processions really drive away all the evil spirits of the Haslital and attract many locals as well as tourists. The origins of the trychel lie in pre-Christian times, when the inhabitants of the mountain valley tried to keep the evil spirits away from their villages during the longest nights of the year.
Even today, every Hasli-Trychler knows that he has to drive away the evil spirits with his magical sounds, which are prescribed according to a precise rhythm. This rhythm, however, cannot be compared with a military march. It imperiously forces a slow sliding step, while the upper body rhythmically swings the bell or trychel. Thus this nocturnal hustle and bustle goes on for hours up and down the street.
The trychel march is in the blood of every real Oberhasler, so to speak, from childhood. Although several thousand visitors from near and far fill the streets of Meiringen, the trychel week cannot be compared to a carnival week or similar events with bell processions. The Trycheln as well as the Übersitz is and remains something unique!
