Quantum computing, forecasted to contribute trillions of dollars to the global economy by the year 2035 and having the potential to enhance computing power in comparison to conventional supercomputers, is enabling space scientists and engineers to be able to solve complex tasks of space exploration that conventional computers could not solve.

Realizing the importance of applying quantum computing techniques to develop advanced space exploration technologies, several government space agencies and private space companies are investing in quantum computing. Examples include the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), European Space Agency (ESA), Google Quantum AI, SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, Airbus, Axiom Space, and a host of others.

Airbus is in partnership to develop quantum algorithms for aerospace systems, and it launched competitions for experts to work on aerospace challenges and to harness quantum computing power for the reduction of carbon emissions.

SpaceX CRS-31 mission is scheduled to launch the Space Entanglement and Annealing Quantum Experiment (SEAQUE), a quantum communication experiment, into the International Space Station (ISS) to test secure long-distance quantum communication technology in space.
