When she was 17 years old, Afrika was arrested with 15 other co-defendants and charged with conspiracy in the first and second degrees. If found guilty, Afrika would’ve served up to 25 years in prison. After serving six months on Riker’s Island, Afrika’s case was adjudicated as a youth offender, and she was given a second chance. With that second chance she graduated with honors from a private college, and was awarded a Fulbright grant where she taught English and founded a Black women’s empowerment group in Cape Town, South Africa. In her talk, Afrika discusses the power of community support, access to resources, storytelling, and mentorship as overlapping themes in both her jail and Fulbright experiences.
Afrika works at The Center for Constitutional Rights as an Administrative Associate, supporting the legal director and department as a whole. She continues to volunteer in her community as a member of Community Board 10, mentoring young women of color, and assisting high school students applying to college. She is a poet, writer, community leader, activist, and teacher who uses her personal experiences to speak truth to power and to help provide her community with the tools to empower themselves against oppressive systems that exist to break them. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
