We discuss the urgent need to release all prisoners serving jail time solely for cannabis-related offenses under the NDPS Act. We highlight how cannabis prohibition is unscientific, unspiritual, and based on outdated Western ideology imported without proper legislative debate. We point out the hypocrisy of the Indian government, which prohibits cannabis while being the largest beneficiary of alcohol sales—a drug equally narcotic and psychotropic yet excluded from the NDPS Act. We emphasize that cannabis products like bhang are openly sold in places like Uttarakhand, Varanasi, and Ujjain, creating a contradictory legal system where non-violent individuals are imprisoned alongside murderers and rapists. We call for the immediate decriminalization of cannabis and the release of all those incarcerated for cannabis-only offenses.
