I tend to use a female singer for these tracks, partly because I do not always want to openly identify myself with the protagonist. Most of what I write is still very personal though, and usually about one particular woman, even if I am not the one singing. I also try to shape the lyrics so that either a woman or a man could sing them. Someday I may put my own voice to these songs when I feel up to it, but for now I am still telling the story from my own perspective, just through another voice.

This song is about loving someone who does not love you back, and how that love slowly pulls you out of your own life. The verses trace the daily ache of sensing her, dodging her door, changing songs just to avoid thinking of her, yet still feeling the same tug every time. The hook, “I’m not all there,” is the center of it, that feeling of moving through your days like a ghost, present on the outside but missing on the inside because your heart is somewhere else with her, even when you know (mind) she never even thinks of you.

Underneath, the song is a quiet argument between the mind and the heart. The mind keeps trying to be sensible, to hold the heart on a leash and stay in the shallows, listing all the reasons to stay dry and safe, while the heart would stand out in the poring rain, and risk the thunder (that’s from a line I liked but couldn’t fit it in🫤).

Yeah, so the heart keeps singing its own melody anyway, a half remembered tune that longs to risk the deep waters of a relationship, even if it hurts. By the bridge and the last verse, the protagonist (the mind) starts to see that fighting this helpless heart may be doing more damage than the love itself. In the final chorus he stops pretending he can stay untouched, admits he will surely fade if he keeps resisting, and finally lets this helpless heart take hold and lead the way, choosing a real but risky love over a safer, empty life. Yet still, I’m not all there.

Intimate modern soul ballad with warm piano, expressive electric guitar, gentle drums, and smooth bass. A warm, emotional female vocal sits front and center over a relaxed, steady groove with subtle bluesy phrasing.
