It's shocking how many people do not follow these "common sense" ideas on how to be appropriate while networking.

First of all, be respectful and courteous.
Do not request to be friends on Facebook or LinkedIn when you have never spoken before.
If you don’t know the person, don’t let your first message be you asking for something. Don’t ask them to recommend you for a position when they have absolutely no connection to you.
When meeting in person, remember to be appropriate. Do not take out your phone, randomly hand off your resume or speak poorly of former employers.
In order to for the other person to offer you a job, a recommendation or a favor, you have to work for it. Make a good impression and follow up, so that when the time comes, they already have you in mind.
