Today we were once again lucky enough to have a Eastern Koel being feed by a red wattle bird. We hope you enjoy.

Red Wattlebirds feed Eastern Koels because the Koel is a "brood parasite" that lays its eggs in the Wattlebird's nest, tricking them into raising their young. The Wattlebirds, driven by instinct, treat the fast-growing, demanding Koel chick as their own, often working tirelessly to feed it despite it being much larger.


Key Reasons for this Behavior:
Brood Parasitism: Similar to cuckoos, Eastern Koels do not raise their own young. The female Koel deposits her egg into the nest of a host species, commonly the Red Wattlebird.
Instinctual Care: The Wattlebird parents are "fooled" by the chick and driven by biological instincts to feed any gaping mouth in their nest.
Resource Monopolization: The young Koel hatches early and often pushes the Wattlebird’s own eggs or hatchlings out of the nest, ensuring it receives all food and attention.
Voracious Appetite: The juvenile Koel is often much larger than its foster parents and calls incessantly, demanding constant feeding.
Common Host: Red Wattlebirds are frequently targeted because they are abundant, particularly in urban areas, making them ideal hosts for the Koel's breeding strategy.

From dusk until dawn you will see full bird activity no matter what the time of day.

Please note a lot of the activity will be first thing in the morning and late arvo, so feel free to even watch it on 2, 3 or even 4x speed so you dont miss anything exciting :)
