We create a click video of this hospital chapel to share with you, even though there is not a specific time yet to visit that place.
The hospital chapel temple is described likely by local communities, Leak Neang. The name Leak Neang in Khmer is used for several temples because it is a modern descriptive name given by local communities, rather than the original historical name recorded in ancient inscriptions.
Leak Neang translates literally to Hidden Woman temple or Hidden Princess temple.
• Cultural Context: In Cambodia, small, isolated, or overgrown temples are often romanticized through folklore. The name implies a place where a princess might have been hidden away or where a female spirit resides.
Why are there so many?
Because the original names of these smaller sites were lost over centuries, locals named them based on their appearance or local legends. This has led to at least three different temples sharing the same name in the Angkor region. This Leak Neang hospital chapel is located west of Ta Keo temple. Originally one of 102 hospitals built by King Jayavarman VII.
Prasat Leak Neang temple is just one of many hospital chapels in the Angkor region. According to historical inscriptions, King Jayavarman VII built 102 hospitals throughout the Khmer Empire in the late 12th century, each featuring a small stone chapel like the one near Ta Keo temple.
