Welcome back to Mahiro’s Japanese School!
In this episode of our 47 Prefectures of Japan series, we explore Fukui Prefecture —
one of Japan’s most surprising and underrated destinations.
Fukui is famous for world-class dinosaurs, dramatic seaside cliffs, deep Zen culture,
and incredible local food. From the famous Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum — often
called one of the best dinosaur museums in the world — to the breathtaking cliffs of
Tojinbo, this prefecture is full of adventure, history, and unforgettable scenery.
🦖 First, we dive into the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum.
You’ll discover dinosaurs actually found in Fukui, interactive exhibits,
fossil excavation experiences, and why many visitors compare it to Jurassic Park.
🌊 Next, we visit Tojinbo Cliffs, a rare geological wonder found in only three places
in the world. Towering columns of rock rise dramatically from the Sea of Japan,
and sunset views here are truly unforgettable.
🏖 We also explore Mizushima Island and Diamond Long Beach — romantic, peaceful
coastal spots with white sand, pine forests, and crystal-clear water.
🧘 Then, we slow down at Eiheiji Temple, one of the most important Zen temples in Japan.
With over 700 years of history, towering cedar trees, and real monk training,
this is the perfect place to learn about Zen Buddhism, meditation, and temple manners.
🛕 You’ll also be amazed by the Echizen Great Buddha — one of the largest Buddha statues
in Japan — surrounded by over 1,200 stone Buddhas and a massive five-story pagoda.
🍽 Finally, we introduce Fukui’s incredible local food:
Echizen crab (one of Japan’s most premium crabs), grated soba noodles,
Fukui-style sauce katsudon, fermented heshiko fish, Wakasa flounder,
local taro dishes, traditional summer sweets, famous sake like Kokuryu and Bon,
and Fukui’s famous jumbo fried tofu.
If you love Japanese culture, food, history, and hidden destinations,
this episode will make you want to visit Fukui.
