In this video, we're preparing Daab Chingri, a classic Bengali dish made with juicy prawns and cooked inside a green coconut. This recipe is packed with traditional flavors and gives a perfect blend of coastal Bengali cuisine. Daab Chingri is famous for its rich, aromatic taste, which comes from the unique combination of prawns, spices, and the natural essence of coconut.
Ingredients:
Fresh prawns (500g)
Green coconut (1 whole)
Fresh ginger paste (1 tbsp)
Fresh garlic paste (1 tbsp)
Green chilies (4-5, slit)
Mustard paste (1 tbsp)
Mustard oil (2 tbsp)
Coconut milk (1/2 cup)
Turmeric powder (1/2 tsp)
Red chili powder (1 tsp)
Salt to taste
Sugar (1/2 tsp)
Fresh coriander leaves (for garnishing)
Method:
1. Preparation of Prawns:
Clean and devein the prawns. Marinate them with turmeric, salt, and a little bit of mustard oil for about 15 minutes.
2. Opening the Coconut:
Carefully open the green coconut, reserving the water inside (you can drink this later or use it for the recipe).
3. Cooking the Prawns:
In a pan, heat mustard oil. Add ginger and garlic paste and sauté until fragrant. Add the marinated prawns and cook until they turn pink.
4. Making the Gravy:
Add mustard paste, red chili powder, turmeric powder, and green chilies. Stir well and cook for a minute. Add coconut milk, salt, and sugar. Let the gravy simmer until the prawns are cooked perfectly and the sauce thickens.
5. Stuffing the Coconut:
Place the cooked prawns and gravy inside the hollowed-out coconut. Close it with the coconut's top. Now, steam the whole coconut for 15-20 minutes in a steamer or a pressure cooker (without the weight).
6. Serving:
After steaming, carefully open the coconut. The aromatic Daab Chingri is now ready to serve! Garnish with fresh coriander leaves for that extra touch.
Tips:
For extra flavor, use fresh mustard oil.
Ensure that the prawns are not overcooked to keep them tender.
You can adjust the spice level according to your taste.
This dish is perfect for special occasions or a festive Bengali meal. The tender prawns, rich coconut gravy, and the smoky flavor from the steamed coconut make it an unforgettable culinary experience.
