Rest Day Worked: Linby Station Signalbox - 1979-2010 (Re-uploaded with watermark)

Описание: Located at 133 milepost on the former Midland Railway route from Nottingham to Worksop At the time this was the last block post on the line following the closure of Annesley tunnel although Annesley Station signalbox survived till about 1984 as a shunter's cabin. That surviving cabin, although in good condition, was torn apart for firewood by locals during the strike leaving only the floor, main timbers and roof and Linby Station as the last box on the line.

Linby was closed when the colliery shut-down in 1988 following the ensuing post-1984 de-industrialisation of the UK. Traces of the up-platform survive to this day and lie on the north side of the road crossing and can be identified by their "sloped" Midland fencing. The box was originally situated on the down platform and the very early M.R. style station buildings were situated opposite and demolished probably around 1969. The orange pencil sharpener and stationmaster Kirk (a true gentleman) being the only survivors of the original station. The box was extended from it's original 15 foot length with the addition of a 5 foot section in order to accommodate a larger tumbler lever frame. The Great Central viaduct used to cross this line approximately where the up home signal is located, about 100 yds north of the box.
The box was boarded up at my request via the LDC but several attempts were made
to wreck this and the cabin opposite by local thugs. The contents were smashed and the mess-cabin was torched and destroyed (see later slides) but the box was more fortunate. This box and Linby Colliery were rescued by the Midland Railway Centre and it is now in Swanwick yard with replacement equipment where it has been renamed Brands Sidings and is open to the public. Hucknall signalbox wasn't so lucky and despite boarding-up it was set on fire by local idiots on bonfire night some months after it was closed in 1986. See http://www.midlandrailwaycentre.co.uk...
