Belgium - Claes Confirms His Innocence

A Belgian parliamentary commission of inquiry on Saturday (14/10)
recommended the indictment of NATO Secretary General Willy Claes
for corruption dating back to the late 1980s when he was Belgian
economy minister. Claes appeared before the commission at the
Belgian parliament in Brussels for six hours in Friday (13/10). In
a brief statement later, the commission did not elaborate on the
allegations against Claes but said "a continuation of the
investigation (against Claes) is necessary." Claes told reporters Friday that he denied all allegations against him in testimony before the commission. "I confirmed my total innocence in the Agusta and
Dassault affairs," Claes told reporters.
