European spiders – Four spot orb weaver (Araneus quadratus)

The four-spot orb-weaver (Araneus quadratus) is a common spider species in Europe. They are quite variable in appearance but they always have the characteristic four white spots on the abdomen. This spider builds its web close to the ground to catch jumping insects such as small grasshoppers. Last year I came across a meadow that was full of these orb-weavers. I spent a day with them trying to film how they catch and eat their prey. Enjoy watching the spiders on the hunt, even though the scenes can seem quite brutal.
