CSM How to get the optimum tension for the yarn in use and how to tell if the tension is too tight

Описание: This video will show you how to find the optimum yarn tension for a particular yarn on the cylinder in use.

The 72 cylinder is used for this demonstration. Note that the tension settings will be different for any other size cylinder because the needle spacing will affect the yarn tension.

The recommended tension for the Opal yarn in use is 42 rows/10 cm (4”). That equates to 10.5 rows/“. I prefer 11 sts/in and therefore try to set my CSM to achieve that setting. Some people prefer to knit at lower settings for a looser fabric. Do what is right for you.

Find a comfortable working tension
Increase the tension (remember “up-tight”) 1 full turn at a time until the stitches start to raise on the needles and/or skip stitches.
Back the tension off 1 full turn and that is the optimum (tightest tension) for that yarn on that cylinder.
Engage the heel spring to ensure that the tension setting will work with the heel spring engaged. If not, decrease the tension 1/2 turn.
In my experience the heel spring will increase the tension of the yarn and result in a tighter gauge tension of approximately 1 row/inch.
NOTE: Different yarns/brands (and sometimes colours within a brand) may require different tension settings and will knit at a different optimum gauge (rows/inch)
