Éowyn - Lullaby

Lullay, my bright-born, the stars are in sight,
Listen to tales of the dawn and the night.

Once lived a Dove, of feather so white,
In a flock of Grey-Wings, brothers of might.
While her brothers would soar where west winds still blow,
She tended her Uncle, weary and low,
For a Serpent had struck him a venomous blow,
And her days were of healing, quiet and slow.
But the daylight grew dim and the shadows crept in,
The Bat-King arose with his shadow-born kin.
To drink of the life-blood, to ruin the place,
And tear every nest without mercy or grace.
The Uncle, though wounded, led forth the flight,
To meet the dark army in the heart of the night.
"Stay back, little Dove, for you have no might,
But to tend to the fallen and keep the hearth bright."
The Dove looked at ashes, cold in the pan,
And over her feathers the grey cinders ran.
No longer a white bird, she followed the clan,
To break the dark shadow and foil its plan.
The sky was a whirlwind of fang and of beak,
The Bat-King was feasting by slaying the weak.
He felled the old Uncle, and swollen with pride
“The hour is mine!” the Shadow-King cried:
"No wing that is grey shall ever touch me!
No son of the flock shall set the land free!"
But a small, hidden Swift from the shadows below,
Struck at the Tyrant with his sharp little claw.
As the Dove clad in ash, with a heart fierce and free,
Cried, "No brother of mine shall smite you, but me!"
She dove through the darkness, she tore at his wing,
And down to the earth fell the Dove and the King.
The bats shrieked in terror at the sight of King's fall,
And fled from the valley, once and for all.

So sleep now, Elboron, golden and fair,
The White Dove is watching, no shadow is there.
She sings to her nestling a soft, quiet lay,
To show him the sky at the dawning of day.
