In a surprise move former Minister Mathias Cormann has been elected the new head of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
In response to the major diplomatic victory for Australia Mr Cormann said he was “absolutely thrilled” the selection committee had decided to recommend his appointment.
“I’m going to be very outcomes focused, I’m going to be focused on bringing people together, on building consensus, and making sure that we deploy all of the policy and analytical capability of the OECD to maximum effect," he said.
The five-year term will begin on June 1 and Prime Minister Scott Morrison has congratulated Mr Cormann on the new role saying it’s important to have an Australian to spearhead the global economic recovery.
Mr Cormann served in Australia’s federal parliament from 2007 to 2020 and will become the first person from the Asia-Pacific region to lead the 37-nation organisation.
At least 24 environmental groups condemned the decision.
