Bangladesh has spoken. In the elections to the 300-member Jatiyo Sangsad, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured 212 seats, comfortably crossing the halfway mark of 151 and achieving a decisive two-thirds majority. The Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party coalition won 77 seats, emerging as the principal opposition. With the Awami League debarred from contesting, analysts believe a segment of its traditional vote bank may have shifted to the BNP. While the landslide mandates political stability, the strong showing of Jamaat—particularly in constituencies adjoining the India-Bangladesh border—has triggered security concerns in India.
