Hi, my name's Amanda Schlichting and I am a graduate architect in Dewberry's Danville, Virginia, office. Today I'm going to talk to you a little bit about space planning, which is one of the core concepts in interior design. Space planning is a process of effectively and efficiently utilizing space while considering the clients' specific needs, wants, and requirements. Space planning, you have to consider a whole bunch of different requirements, particularly with the building code. Some of the things you need to think about are egress, corridor width, lighting, storage, and signage. While thinking about the building code requirements, you also have to consider the clients' particular environment and situations, including their work groups, their work flow, the team dynamics and different interdepartmental relationships, storage, and technology. Given all the factors that are at play here, it's very important that space planning is started very early in the design process, usually in line with the schematic design of the architectural phase. So space planning usually begins with a survey of any furniture and equipment that is going to go into the new space. This includes interviews with the owner, the client, and anyone else in the different departments who may be using the space. This results in plans and diagrams that end up contributing the overall architectural effect of the space.
