At 18H00 on 19 January 2023, the Minister of Basic Education will officially announce the various provincial Matric Pass rates at a special ceremony in Fairland Johannesburg. This ceremony will celebrate top achievers, and the Matric class.

This ceremony has become an annual tradition whereby the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, will congratulate top achieving Matrics, Educators as well as announce the Matric pass rate for all 9 provinces.

The release of the Matric results always sparks debate about the state of the South African education system, and the results of the class of 2022 will definitely spark debate in the coming days.

The National Matric pass rate over the years has always gone up and down, the lack of consistency is a point of debate among education specialists. However, the point that we are all interested in, is which province will be crowned the best performing province in the country.

Being named the top performing province is a prestigious honour that only a handful of provinces has claimed in the past 25 years. Last year, Free State took the crown, with a pass rate of 85.7%. Will Free State do it again? Or will another province take the title of the best performing matric pass rate in South Africa for 2022. Only time will tell!
