Podocarpus aka African Fern Pine is an evergreen shrub. It is a low maintenance shrub for sun or shade. Its leaves are needle like. The soft, fine textured foliage is great looking. New leaves appear green, which magnificent against the older dark green foliage.
This plant is used as screen and background plant. They can be grown in streets, gardens, laws, patios and in containers. Podocarpus is moderate growing. In pots they can grow up to 7 feet.
Podocarpus does well in full sun or part shade, though in shade, these plants will grow more slowly.
Podocarpus prefer moist, organically rich and well draining soil mix. Use following mix.
Garden Soil: 30%
Compost: 30% (Vermi / Cow)
Sand: 30%
Coco peat: 30%
This plant needs consistent watering when young. They don't like boggy soils. Water deeply and infrequently, waiting until the soil begins to dry out then water again. Established plants are drought tolerant.
Podocarpus does well in moderate temperatures and high humidity.
The propagation of this plant can be done through branch cutting. Take 6 inch cutting from the new growth. Remove all the leaves at the lower end of the cutting. Dip the cut end into rooting powder. Push the cutting into moist, rich, well draining soil mix. Keep the soil moist until root form.
