How to support children’s communication and language through a play dough activity

Communication and language forms the foundation of the seven areas of children’s communication skills as when children engage with their parents, peers and key persons they not only form friendships and connections but also build on their vocabulary and speech and language development. It is therefore pertinent that practitioner support children’s language development through consistent interactions during activities and when supporting children’s to meet their personal care needs and as they establish a sense of self. Babies and toddlers can be supported in their early language development through repetition, and interactions for example through the use of their fine motor skills eg babies using their palmer grasp and toddlers and children using their pincer grasp which can help them in their literacy and writing. Constant repetition of the word “cup” would reinforce the learning intent and goal to be achieved.

This video is dedicated to practitioners and parents, grandparents or carers in supporting children to gain an understanding of the world around them and supporting children to learn through expressive art and design.
We can support children’s language development theough the use of traditional nursery songs and rhymes such as “10 green bottles; five little ducks, five fat sausages frying in the pan, using resources that makes sound such as drum piano, tablet etc These will help children to engage through eye coordination and hand movement as well as repetition of sounds and words which will reinforce their speech development. The early years particularly from the zero to 3 years are significant as during these period, chidren’s brain development and quest to learn is mostly active ; therefore practitioners need to ensure that they support children in their holistic learning and development.
