There are many physical condition, which are essential for bacterial growth or it affect the growth of bacteria.
1) Temperature-- It is one of the important factor that for growth.
Optimum growth temperature- that temperature at which bacteria grow rapid and maximum.
Based on temperature they classified:
~Psychrophiles
~Mesophiles
~Thermophiles
2) pH--- Each microbial species has definite pH range for growth and multiplication. Depending on optimum pH value of microorganisms, they can be classified as follows:
~Acidophiles
~Neutrophiles
~Alkalophiles
3) Gaseous requirements: The principle gases that affects bacterial growth are oxygen and carbon dioxide.
depending on that bacteria can be classified as:
~Aerobic bacteria
~Anaerobic bacteria
~Facultatively anaerobic bacteria
~Photosynthetic and chemosynthetic bacteria
4) Osmotic pressure: Bacteria are most tolerant to osmotic variations because of the mechanical strength of the cell wall. They can grow in media with widely varying contents of salt, sugar and other solutes.
5) Light: Bacteria are light sensitive ( sensitive to UV ligh, direct light (sunlight) and other radiations.
So, darkness is usually favourable for growth of all microbes.
