El choclo is the title of a famous Argentine tango song known as "La Guardia Vieja," written by musician Ángel Gregorio Villoldo Arroyo in 1903. This tango debuted on November 3, 1903, with José Luis Roncallo's orchestra, who had transcribed the score, and was performed at an elegant Buenos Aires restaurant, "El Americano."
At that time, tango was not well regarded by the city's high society, but rather relegated to the poorest and most marginalized classes. Therefore, when the orchestra's director announced the next piece, he introduced it as a vague "Creole Dance," to avoid the prejudice of the owner and those present.
