Palomino Blackwing Pencils
I have been drawing with this pencil for over a year now. The Palomino Blackwing 602.
I have drawn with a lot of different pencils, but drawing with the Blackwing 602 is a total different experience. The pencil has a great design especially with its iconic ferrule that holds the eraser. The color of the casing has a grey shiny glow.
The ferrule holds the eraser in place. With most pencils the eraser is already gone before you have used your entire pencil. The ferrule is especially designed to add a new eraser. At Palomino they have made separate erasers you can buy and use on the Blackwing pencil. In different colors. So you can always make a custom pencil by using a variety of color erasers. But what makes drawing with the 602 different than drawing with other graphite pencils?

When you sharpen your pencil you can already notice the difference. The lead of the pencil feels softer. If you have to compare it to other pencils numbers it feels like an HB pencil, but with a softer touch. If you read the in script on the Pencil “Half the Pressure, twice the speed”. And in fact that says it all. You don’t need to press hard to draw. The pencil flows gradually over your paper. So it is great for sketching. When you add more pressure to the pencil you get a stronger and precise line.
The Blackwing has a rich history. It all began in the thirties of the last century when the pencil was first introduced by Eberhard Faber. A lot of artists and composers fell in love with the pencil The list of users includes the author John Steinbeck, the composers Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein and last but not least Chuck Jones, the director of Bugs Bunny and other Loony Toons.
In 1998 the Blackwing was discontinued and no longer available. Resulting in a bid war on Ebay to find the last pencils. Fans were ready to pay $40,00 for a single Blackwing Pencil. The demand for the pencil was higher than the supply and some years later the pencil was re-introduced again buy the Pencil manufacturer Palomino Brands. Palomino Brands already had a rich history of producing quality pencils for artists dating back to the mid 19th century.

The Palomino Blackwing 602 is a pencil that is also used for writing and music annotation. Because the point is very firm it is great for precise strokes and lettering. Apart from the 602 Palomino also produces the Blackwing. The Blackwing has a softer lead and is great for drawing and creating softer gradients. It resembles the touch and feel of a 2B pencil. The latest edition to the Blackwing family is the Palomino Blackwing Pearl. It has a softer touch than the original 602, but stronger than the Blackwing. It feels like you are drawing with a 1B pencil, with a soft touch but still a precise core.
