After delivering 500 kilograms of ammonium nitrate to warehouse 221, an employee at the AZF factory in Toulouse unwittingly made a serious mistake. Within minutes, the product transformed, causing the largest explosion ever seen at an industrial site in France. The detonation was felt up to 80 kilometers away. In a fraction of a second, Toulouse and its inhabitants were plunged into a post-apocalyptic scene strangely reminiscent of what America had experienced a few days earlier. The accident left 31 people dead and 22,000 injured. How did the disaster gradually unfold? What sometimes surprising factors led to the disaster that day? What mistakes were made?
