Vypin Island, in Ernakulam district, is a long, thin island stretching 25 kilometers between Kochi estuary in the south and Kodungallur Bay in the north. Vypin is one of the most densely populated islands in Asia.
According to historical books, the 'Vaypp' seen today is the sediment brought by the Periyar and other rivers during the flood of AD 1341.
On the Vaippin-Pallipuram road, one kilometer east of the Malipuram junction on the Elangunnapuzha panchayat border, St. George's Church, named after Saint George is located. This temple, which was a part of Vallarpadam Vimochakanatha Parish, was raised as an independent parish in 1849. The present new church, built as a 150th-anniversary gift to the parish, was blessed in May 2006.
This Roman Catholic Church, under Varapuzha Archdiocese, and the parish community which excels in Christian spirit and tradition, is celebrating its 100th Platinum Jubilee after 174 holy years.
The Gothic facade of the church is beautiful, standing tall with heavenly radiance. Inside the Church, below the altar, the 'Emmaus' scene is depicted in wood. Behind the altar, in the center of the beautiful teak altar, you can see the beautifully sculpted altar, and above it, the Bible, reminiscent of the Tabernacle. At the top is a crucifix, near the Virgin Mary, and at the bottom center is a majestic figure of the parish mediator, St. Gevarghis. Below it, are figures of St. Thomas the Apostle on the left and St. Francis Xavier on the right. Below it on both sides are the beautiful figures of St. Joseph and St. Sebastian, respectively. On either side of the main altar are figures of Saint Anthony, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Judas, and images of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Mercy of Jesus.
The golden beams radiating from the uppermost ceiling of the altar to the sides and the vast blue sky background and fragments on the outer sides create a sense of divine presence in the mind of any believer who enters the temple.
The Vedic building adjacent to the church, which is old but full of features, and the dome chapel in the spacious churchyard are special sights. The entrance to the temple courtyard is separated by three elegant gates. A beautiful grotto of the Mother is on the left side!
The three chapels named after Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, Saint George, and Saint Anthony are a beautiful testimony to the Christian tradition of the parish.
Celebrating its 100th Silver Jubilee, Sacred Heart UP School is a landmark in the history of the parish and shines with the light of knowledge to students of all castes and religions. Another educational institution, St. Joseph LP School, Panakkapadam, survives the idiosyncrasies of the era even after a century and continues to provide education to the children of the area. Malipuram St. Peter's LP School, which was a part of this parish, is now a part of Auchanthuruth Nityasayamata Parish.
St. Anthony's Convent, which has always been helpful in the spiritual needs of the parish, has been empowering some of the unemployed here through the operation of their printing press.
Coconut groves, paddy fields, backwaters, and streams surround most of the people here, who make their livelihood through fishing and rice farming. A large number of educated people are engaged in work according to their education. There are also many people who do daily work through construction activities in the unorganized sector, such as carpentry, stonework, and other related jobs, as well as those working in the organized sector.
There are traders here who sell everyday goods. At a time when people from all walks of life were together, the Christian faith community was extending the steps of goodness forward by living the message of love, fellowship, and sharing.
The fact that one of the first two Basic Christian Communities formed in the Archdiocese of Varapuzha in 1983 was in Karthedam St. George Parish is something that is proudly commemorated in this centenary platinum jubilee.
Perumalpady St. Sebastian Parish and Malipuram Kadapuram St. Joseph Parish, which were part of Karthedam St. George Parish, became independent parishes. Now, under this parish, apart from the parish church, Sunday Mass is also offered at Pukkad Holy Cross Church and Chungam St. Mary's Church. Additionally, Panakkapadam St. Anthony's Chapel, Elankunnapuzha St. Sebastian's Chapel, Perumalpady Tiruhridaya Chapel, Jubilee Chapel, and Japamalarajni Chapel also help us to strengthen the presence of God and deepen our prayer life.
