Starting in September 2025, the U.S. government significantly tightened the interview waiver program for tourist visa applicants.
Before September 2, 2025, many tourist visa applicants were able to renew their visas without attending another interview. However, after this date, most applicants are no longer eligible for the interview waiver, including many tourist visa holders.
Possible Exception to the Interview Requirement
You may still qualify for an interview waiver if:
✔️ You previously held a full-validity visa
✔️ Your prior visa expired within the last 12 months
✔️ You were 18 years or older when your previous visa was issued
If you meet these criteria, you may qualify for an exception and avoid another interview.
Important Tips for Tourist Visa Applicants
🔹 Apply early
Processing times may be longer than before, so plan well in advance of your intended travel.
🔹 Prepare for the interview
Common questions may include:
1. What is the purpose of your trip?
2. Where will you stay?
3. What ties do you have to your home country?
Be prepared to explain your plans clearly and honestly, such as sightseeing, visiting landmarks, or traveling to places like California or San Francisco.
🔹 Show strong ties to your home country
This may include bank accounts, employment or business ownership, family ties, or other obligations.
