The Avanade Intelligent Garden on display at the Chelsea Flower Show uses sensors and a small language AI model to allow visitors to communicate with and understand more about, trees in the garden. The idea behind the gold-prize winning display is to "invite connection with nature and gather data to ultimately help protect and preserve the ecosystems that are so vital to our survival on this planet," says designer Tom Massey.
The sensors attached to the trees record growth patterns, hydration levels, and sunlight, and give visitors an overview of a tree's health, as well as changes over time. With enough data, says Massey, it can show the influence of pollution or predict disease in trees showing particular symptoms. But, most of all, it helps establish a closer connection to nature, says Massey, something that is known to have many health benefits. "Using technology that I personally think can encourage nature connection.
