Hundreds of students gathered on the University of Michigan Diag Friday to protest the Trump administration’s use of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Michigan and across the nation.
The event, originally proposed by Wolverines for Abdul, became a partnership with dozens of student organizations, including Student Democrats, March for Our Lives, the Human Rights Party, Wolverine Gammas and the University of Michigan Greek Council.
Washtenaw County Commissioner Yousef Rabhi joined the protest on the Diag, taking the mic briefly to lay out a scathing indictment of the Department of Homeland Security as he related his family’s experience after the 9/11 attacks.
The crowd of protesters marched from the steps of the Shapiro Undergraduate Library across Ingalls Mall to Rackham Auditorium, stopping to recite chants like “ICE out now!” and “Prosecute Trump, Prosecute Noem!” before circling back to the diag on William and State Streets as police blocked traffic.
The group then proceeded from the Diag down State Street, past the Intramural Sports building on Hoover Avenue and the Central Campus Housing Project on South Division Street and returned to the Diag once more via Hill and State Streets.
