It's the ultimate in cartographic achievement - to be both radically novel and entirely correct. Our map was so novel that at least one rival cartographer took to gaslighting the public in print. It was about 1700, and the interior of Africa was still a complete cipher to Europeans. Maps of Africa were jumbles of legends and rumors - worthless, in fact, except for the coastlines. But a new map burst onto Europe, presenting a new and (as we determine in this video) correct view of the inscrutable continent.
Here we show exactly how the old maps evolved - their origin in ancient texts and how mistakes kept piling up within them. We also show how the new map came to fruition - it's origins and refinement over three generations - and how it was received by the world.
