Good site for calculating (and a chart), of Earth curvature vs.distance, I have seen this myself while traveling North on Highway 5 from California to Oregon as the upper part of Mt. Shasta (14,000 plus feet), comes into view 100+ miles away, and gradually as you draw closer you see more of the lower and lower part of the mountain.
