🎹 Background of the Song & Artist

“Lust for Life” is a 1977 classic performed by American singer Iggy Pop and co-written by David Bowie for the album of the same name. In 2021, Rolling Stone ranked it at No. 325 on their updated list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”

The song, originally written on a ukulele, is best known for its iconic opening drumbeat played by Hunt Sales. The rhythm was inspired by the Armed Forces Network call signal and has influenced countless songs, including Jet’s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” and Travis’ “Selfish Jean.”

“Lust for Life” reached No. 3 on the Dutch Top 40, fueled in part by Iggy Pop’s explosive performance on the Dutch TV show TopPop. The lyrics contain references to William S. Burroughs’ experimental novel The Ticket That Exploded, including “Johnny Yen” and “hypnotizing chickens,” adding layers of literary and subversive intrigue to the track.
