DIY Garage / Shop Air Filtration System

Wanted to try building my own air filtration system rather than buying one. This is essentially a box designed to hold a box fan and sit on top of ceiling joists ~ 16" on center and hold a 20" box fan pulling air through a 12 x 30 x 1 MERV 13 filter. It certainly works out cheaper, but there is a decent amount of labor involved.

Materials and approximate costs:

(1) 3/4" x 4' x 8' MDF - $20
(1) 1/2" x 3' rolled flat steel - $4
(~35) 1-1/4" x #8 Torx Exterior Screws - $10 for entire box
(~20) 2-1/2 x 9 multi-purpose screws - $10 for entire box
(8) #6 32 x 1/2 machine screws - not sure on cost; they're cheap
(1) Lasko Box Fan - $20
(1) Loc-tite - $7 for entire tube
(1) MERV 13 12 x 30 x 1 Filters - $8 each
(1) DAP Polyurethane Construction Adhesive - $10
(1) Kasa Smart Switch - $18
Scrap 1/4 plywood - free
Scrap 2x4 - free

So total cost all-in - if you have to buy everything, which I didn't, as I had a lot of this stuff laying around - would be ~ $112. That's not bad, considering the WEN unit is listed for $292 on Amazon at the moment.

Note: Looking at the WEN unit, it's likely I could mount that above my joists as well...still deciding on whether to build or buy for the second unit.
