In August 2021, as the Taliban rapidly took control of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul became the last exit for tens of thousands of civilians, foreign nationals, and Afghans who had worked with Western forces.
As U.S. and allied militaries rushed to evacuate people, chaos overwhelmed the airport perimeter.
Hundreds of civilians flooded the runway, attempting to board departing military aircraft.
Video footage verified by international media showed individuals clinging to the exterior of U.S. Air Force planes during takeoff.
Official investigations later confirmed that at least two people fell from an aircraft shortly after takeoff, though there is no evidence of mass casualties in the air.
Between 14 and 30 August 2021, the evacuation airlifted over 123,000 people, making it the largest evacuation operation in U.S. history.
The tragedy on the runway remains a symbol of extreme civilian desperation during the collapse of a state — not a failure of flight, but a collapse of safety and certainty.
