Alberta premier celebrates Supreme Court decision on Bill C-69, says province "open for business"

Описание: In wake of the news that the Supreme Court of Canada ruled against Bill C-69 on Friday — the federal government’s impact assessment law on the environmental effects of major developments — Alberta Premier Danielle Smith held a press conference to celebrate, announcing that the province is "once again, open for business."

Smith described the bill as "an existential threat to Alberta's economy," claiming that it was "already responsible for the loss of tens of billions of dollars in investment and thousands of jobs" nationwide.

Five out of seven Supreme Court judges found a large portion of the bill to be unconstitutional as it ultimately sought to regulate activities within provincial jurisdiction.

"Alberta will simply not accept being handcuffed by Ottawa's unfair overreach with another blatant attempt to erode and emasculate the rights of the constitutional authority of the provinces as equal and sovereign orders of government," Smith added.

Claiming she was still on board with the federal government's emission reduction target, Smith further expressed hopes that after being told they can't be "unilateral," Liberals will "come to the table and work with [Alberta] on shared goals."
