Six years after Arminius destroyed three Roman legions at Teutoburg, General Germanicus launched a massive revenge campaign into Germania. But the return march became a nightmare. Four legions under Caecina Severus were trapped on a crumbling log causeway through miles of Germanic swamp. Arminius was already waiting on the hills above them.
For two and a half days, Roman soldiers fought off coordinated attacks while rebuilding a road that kept washing away overnight. A false rumor nearly caused 20,000 men to flee into the dark. Caecina had to lie down in the gateway to stop his own army from running to their deaths.
Then came the tribal council vote that cost Arminius his greatest victory — and saved Rome from catastrophe.
