Meet Barmer's E-ASHA

In 2006, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj named Barmer among India's 250 most backward districts. In addition to economic challenges and the daily hardships imposed by a life in the desert, women and children in Barmer have limited access to quality health care and counseling services. The infant and maternal mortality rate in the district is among the highest in Rajasthan.

The people living in villages in this district, like any other district in India, rely heavily on ASHA workers to provide counselling on pregnancy and newborn care. In April this year, the community health mobilizers of Barmer witnessed a drastic transformation in their roles when they were equipped with tablets to support their work of counseling mothers and pregnant women on issues related to health, nutrition, sanitation and best hygiene practices. Besides significantly improving their counseling capacity, the tablets helped the health workers to keep a tab on the health of mothers, pregnant women and children.

A large credit for this innovation goes to the young students like Vivek Agarwal and Vaibhav Bahuguna from IIT Jodhpur who have worked hard for the idea of E-ASHA to be successful.
