a preview of the FULL video at: https://www.rojodojo.com/gikan-ryu-so... We continue to explore the Gikan Ryū waza as taught by Noguchi Sensei in Japan. 其の九 Sono Kyū is a mutō dori. Noguchi called our starting kamae ichimonji, but he did it almost like seigan. You evade the cut, then strike and throw.
Noguchi Sensei used specific targets for his 骨法術 koppōjutsu. But being able to hit those targets accurately is a question of having the right distance. I shared a method I learned from Hatsumi Sensei about how to do this with your kamae.
Noguchi Sensei also had a hidden trick for the throw. He hits the opponent in the chest with his elbow, then uses the elbow as a fulcrum to throw. I demonstrated this principle unarmed to show how to set it up.
In another henka, I kick the kyūsho on the other arm. Then I stay connected to it and ride it down to the ground. This effectively grounds his sword.
Next, I shared a henka from Hatsumi Sensei. He rolls the attacker’s kote and turns into a type of 大外刈 ōsoto gari. When that kind of throw happens the opponent’s own sword becomes a hazard to his face and teeth as he hits the ground.
For the henka on the inside, I made a small evasion to unbalance. Then after the strikes, I add some unseen finger attacks. And I also lock up the opponent’s fingers. This type of 指押さえる yubi osaeru is an important aspect of Soke’s movement.
As the class advanced I added an important strategy from Hatsumi Sensei, 強弱柔剛 Kyōjaku jūgō. This means not being soft or hard; not strong or weak. You are somewhere in between. If you present strength, they might respond in kind. If you offer weakness, they might take advantage. We do neither.
Of Note: not dead yet. it’s only a paper cut
