India is a leading player in the textile and apparel industry. India was at one time one of the largest players in this space, in some years it started lagging behind. China, Vietnam and other countries had pulled ahead.

There are initiatives to promote the production of Technical textiles. Amended Textile upgradation scheme, capital subsidy for garments, technnical textiles schemes. (ATUFS) SAATHI SCheme to help small industries.
