I tested how well Gemini 2.5 Pro Experimental can handle both coding and reasoning by asking it to create a private Chrome extension that changes the look of Google Colab—without needing to trust a third-party plugin or accept data agreements.
Gemini generated the code for the manifest.json and the CSS theme file and we iterated from there. Started with pink (13:18), but after a few tweaks for contrast and readability, we went to light pink 16:25 and then tested a midnight blue.
I would make more tweaks… but got it up and working as an extension pretty fast when coding with Gemini.
Want to try it out yourself?
To make your own extension:
Make a folder on your computer.
Inside it, create a manifest.json file and a styles.css file (Gemini can help with the code).
Go to Chrome Extensions: chrome://extensions/
Toggle on Developer mode (top right).
Click "Load unpacked" and select your folder.
